Fitting the Description

drug war

In the years of President Kennedy,
a weed that had grown in Spanish Harlem
sprouted into Johnny.
Barely a year out of high school
when he was accosted by gang members on the street.

The two thugs hailed from the biggest gang in town,
so Johnny knew better than to resist.
Johnny fit the description of a young, up and coming drug dealer,
and the gang didn’t like competition.

“Where’s the dope?” they asked as they went through his pockets.
Despite insisting that he had none, the gang kidnapped him anyway,
hurling him into their wagon with the other young Puerto Rican men,
his wrists choking from the bracelets they gave him. [Read more…]

Why I Closed My Bank Account and Went All Bitcoin

unbanked

A negative balance? Just when I was about to withdraw rent money?

Yes, it appeared that someone had attempted to steal from me. And, in the short term, they had succeeded. Someone had written a check in my name for a couple thousand dollars to try to buy a car. Now, mind you, I can’t remember ever using a check in my eight-plus years since opening that bank account. I barely used the account at all since I had started making all my money in Bitcoin. The only reason I was using it this time was to liquidate some cryptocurrency for rent, since I had procrastinated about selling it for cash. But that one small interaction with the banking system was all it took to somehow make me feel its worst inefficiencies. I called the number provided on the website, was on placed on hold for a half-hour, then transferred to another number and another half-hour hold time, until at last I was sent to the third and final banking representative… complete with another 30-minute hold. They agreed to reverse the charge, but said it would take until the end of the business day. After the bank closed, of course.

To summarize: Someone tried to buy a car by scribbling something on a piece of paper I never touched, said it meant that my money was behind it, and some bank just went and gave them more of my money than I had in my account. And I spent almost 100 minutes on the phone and had to wait until the next day to get it reversed. For $12 per month. When I was already using cryptocurrency and getting more functionality than a bank for free. [Read more…]

Last Stand in Canuckistan

canada

Any Canadian who thinks Americans
are arrogant and dumb
have their suspicions confirmed
every time some disgruntled American voter
threatens to leave for the Great White North
If their candidate is not elected President.

This idle threat is tragically American,
reeking of delusions of exceptionalism.
The myth that we are so wonderful
that Canada will welcome us all.

“Red-blooded” Americans
whose homeland pulls back the welcome mat for foreigners
somehow expect that wherever Americans emigrate
we will be treated just the opposite.

It never occurs to them that Canada may not want us there
perhaps they still think Canada belongs to the U.S.
like Americans did long ago
back when Manifest Destiny aspired to stretch north. [Read more…]

The Revolution Will Be Digitized

digital revolution

Imagine a puzzle that became harder to solve
each time you solved it.
And those who answer this riddle
are rewarded with chunks of data
which serve as currency
that threatens the greedy pigs
who rely on you and I
to replenish their troughs.

This so-called threat
is a digital rebel
that hides deep in the crypt,
outside of the corporate
Ponzi scheme.

Forged in a cooperative money system
absent of hierarchy
or centralization,
the rebel shatters
the monopoly of the cartel. [Read more…]

What A Great Idea

war profit

War for war’s sake does not help the economy
Any more than breaking a window creates a job.
If that were the case, then why not increase
military adventurism until the economy improves?

In fact, why outsource overseas at all?
Those foreigners are taking away jobs from Americans!
Washington can march right in and topple itself
and replace the existing government
with a puppet regime, accountable only to Washington
and the corporate cogs in their war machine.

Those could be American weddings hit with drone strikes
It could be American bodies piled in a heap
Because there wouldn’t be enough time to bury them all
Let’s make America great again

The previous regime
had access to weapons of mass destruction
as well as massive oil reserves
which can pay for the war

or at least pay off the cronies
And stick the taxpayers with the bill
Future Americans can pay for a war
they weren’t even alive to see. [Read more…]

A Horse Is a Horse

horse

A horse is a horse, of course of course
Unless that horse is a tool of the state.
In which case this poor creature has been forced
for consent it cannot communicate.

Its rider sitting atop its back,
the horse think it’s just giving a ride
To the nice men who feed it out back
in the stables where the horse resides.

The horse knows not what’s going on
that its rider is in fact an enforcer
Wielding his badge, pistol and baton
to impose his interpretation of order.

Horses were meant to gallop and play
be petted, cared for and loved
Not to be used in this unnatural way
To look down on people from above. [Read more…]
